Bad Guys is formatted in a way that will be very helpful for struggling and emergent readers Like Pilkey s Ricky Ricotta books, it has simple text accompanied by clear, explanatory pictures I ve never understood the appeal of graphic novels for this population because of the tiny print, but this was perfect Not only was the text to picture ration great, but the length and size of the book makes it look like a middle grade novel instead of a baby book For middle school students who are struggling with reading, this can be very important Even the cover looks middle school appropriate This was also completely hysterical in a way that will be appealing to first graders as much as eighth graders When the group is trying to break in to the dog pound, the wolf ties the snake and piranha to a grappling hook and repeatedly tries to throw them into a window, accompanying each failure with the assurance that THIS time he will definitely be successful The slapstick element is broad, certainly, but still very funny I showed the kitten in a tree sequence to a couple of adult friends, and we laughed until we cried This is a much purchase for school libraries as well as an excellent gift for a wide variety of readers who enjoy Eaton s The Flying Beaver Brothers, Krosoczka s Lunch Ladies, or Vernon s Dragonbreath series I can t wait to see what these guys get up to next flag 4 likesLike see next job is to rescue 200 dogs from the dog pound It involves Shark dressing up as a little girl, Wolf making a great shot, and Piranha and Snake showing the dogs the way out But the plan doesn t quite work out they way they want it too either. This book has the pep and feel of a comic book, filled with large fonts that add attitude to the pages and lots of illustrations In fact, because of its many illustrations it will be a welcome early book for new chapter book readers who will love the humor as well as the pictures that nicely break up the text There is a great zany energy to the entire book with one joke leading nicely to the next The pacing is cleverly done with just enough time to catch your breath from laughing before the action starts again.Blabey s illustrations are a large part of that manic charm They are hugely funny Emotions are shown broadly and wildly on characters faces The shark barely fits into the car and not without a bump out for the dome of his head There are incidents of eating one another and being bashed against walls Each one is hilarious and children will love the slapstick comedy of it all.A funny delight, this illustrated chapter book will have Blabey s other books on his website he seems to have a style that really speaks to my amusement Just those googly eyed characters that look a bit frazzled they speak to me and they just move in.It s a cute story too, about a wolf who s sick of the bad rep he has just because he s a wolf so he tries to do good and recruit others to do good and they look at him a little side eyed for doing it Eventually the wolf gets them to go along with his plan and they may or may not have a different view of things by the end of their escapades.THE BAD GUYS has a good little message about not judging a book by its cover and one bad deed doesn t forever brand a person as bad and all of that So good for kids in that regard But as an adult usually I was so incredibly amused by the jokes and the art that I want to keep reading in the series I just want to look at the pictures It s nice to look at the pictures every once in a while.5I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for He invites other characters who are known for doing other evil things over because he wants to prove that the characters everyone thinks of as bad guys can actually be good guys Throughout the book they go on a mission to do something good where they save a cat from a tree and break a bunch of dogs free from a dog pound After this adventure they drive away exclaiming how they re now good guys The book ends with them riding in a car together and the last page contains the line to be continued showing that there will be a book about another one of their future adventures.Professional recommendation review 1 and 2 and response to two professional reviews I couldn t find any reviews on the CLDC, Horn Book Guide, or Kirkus Reviews websites This is a graphic novel you gave me that s newer that you recommended to me and said it would be okay if I couldn t find any reviews Evaluation of literary elements This book is completely black and white except for the orange cover Some pages contain sequential art for the story line in panels, while others only have one event happening on them representing of a picture book style On most of the pages only the wolf s clothes, the other characters clothes, or some words are black while everything else is grey so the reader s eye automatically goes to the darker images making that image the focus of the panel.Consideration of instructional application I would read this book to my students to teach them about making a hypothesis or predicting what happens next in a book I would teach them about thinking about the details a book gives you at first and how to draw conclusions about what might happen next This book is good to do this with because you know in the beginning that the wolf wants everyone to turn into a good guy so you can make a hypothesis based on his determination to turn them into good guys whether they will actually become good guys or not flag 1 likeLike see review Nov 04, 2016 Ash Its a Word Vomit realize they really aren t as bad as they look.Ha, I have to say this one was probably aimed towards boys and older boys at that , but my daughter loves it She was cracking up at all the fart jokes, and every other joke to be had.The dialogue is written well enough that it makes it super easy to stay in character, giving everyone their own voice and sticking to it It s also an easy read for me as a parent, because it is pretty stinkin funny I just have that sense of humor though. This book takes The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and brings it up to an older readership Though there s no question here, these guys really were bad to begin with. One complaint I have, is that I wish for at least one scene with them trying to be good It just seems to end so abrupt, and really did feel like a setup book for the next one to come It ends with To Be Continued for goodness sake Unfortunately, the next one doesn t come out until early next year Gah So frustrating.Oh well, guess I ll be forced to read and listen to this one a few hundred thousand times before then Just gotta say, THE NEXT ONE BETTER BE EVEN BETTER Real quick, I must add, because I noticed that like everyone mentioned the fart jokes, there s only like two of them So no worries, they re not over the top They re just written in well enough that they re very worth mentioning flag 1 likeLike see review Dec 25, 2016 Karine
