about it intrigued me So I checked out the kindle sample Just a couple chapters, I figured, because I probably wouldn t like it anyway And I was HOOKED.It s perfect, easy beach read material It s not particularly deep, it does not take the genre to new levels or make you think about something new, and yet it DID feel different Evelyn Hugo s story was so delicious and compelling that it stood out, and kept me turning pages in a desperate need to discover the stories behind her seven husbands, and the answer to the one question everyone wants to know who was her greatest love The framing of the story reminded me a lot of The Thirteenth Tale Like that book, in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, a young woman this time an ambitious journalist called Monique Grant goes to interview an elderly woman Unlike The Thirteenth Tale, this elderly woman happens to be one of the most famous actresses in the world.Evelyn Hugo has lived a life in the public eye, but she is full of secrets Only she knows what happened behind the scenes in her long career of scandals and highly publicized heartbreaks Just like the fictional world of the book longed to know the truth so did I Reid and Evelyn s habit of giving you just enough to leave you wanting was incredibly exciting Throughout, we are encouraged to wonder why someone like Evelyn Hugo would specifically request a relatively inexperienced journalist like Monique Why Monique What is Evelyn hiding The I got to know Evelyn, the I fell in love with her She has made a lot of controversial decisions during her career, but she knows it and she also knows she d probably do it all again She s played the Hollywood game, dated famous men to further her career, and used her body to get what she wants She has experienced the full force of the industry s sexism and, in some ways, capitalized on it She is deeply flawed and aware of it She has traded important aspects of her identity for fame, roles, money She was a badass Cuban woman working in an industry that didn t like women to be badass or Cuban She manipulated and she lied Despite everything, I liked her.I stayed fully engrossed in the story of Evelyn Hugo and of Monique Grant from the opening chapters when Evelyn demanded an interview with only Monique, through decades of Hollywood in all its shimmering ugliness, right until the ending s final reveals I enjoyed every moment.Blog Facebook Twitter Instagram Youtube flag 313 likesLike see review View all 16 comments May 06, 2017 Elyse rated it it was amazing Evelyn Hugo, born Evelyn Elena Herrera, daughter of Cuban powerful, charming, and exudes a casualness and confidence that makes her all the radiating This enchanting lovely woman was humble down to earth in areas that mattered Yes, she had seven husbands, too I was quickly bewitched, fully captivated by Evelyn Hugo It was her calm wisdom humble but direct speaking that moved me She made a distinction about words and how they can be misleading, that made me want to SCREAM OUT AND SAY THANK YOU FOR THAT There was a scene early in the book where it was very clear how one word could induce shame Words really can hurt and paint evil pictures preachingassumptions before asking sarcasm..etc I sat and thought about all the times people have used words not chosen them carefully and as a result I d feel hurt or belittled I m no better I also thought about times I did the same to others Words do hurt and damage the spirit and the trust of relationships Ms Hugo, 79 year old Hollywood legend, handled those wrong words with grace, correcting teaching inspiring her new friend at the time while having compassion for herself Her purpose was not to hurt her friend who spoke the wrong words but also not to allow for the misleading word to be, misleading I started reading slower wanting to take in every word out of Evelyn Hugo s mouth , when I realized this Hollywood notable Starlett was sincerely deserving and worthy of the fans she has a celebrity to love I soon discovered this classy gorgeous woman had acute self awareness, high levels of emotional intelligence, clearly socially aware, and relentlessly lived a full life of many experiences filled with joy and challenges I felt like I was given a gift absorbing wisdom from this 79 year old woman Her life experiences were fascinating, glamorous, scandalous and she herself was extraordinary I was learning from this fictional character Monique Grant, Evelyn s new friend, 35 years old, is an unknown reporter at Vivant , in Los Angeles Evelyn wants Monique to write a book about her life story Everyone in the journalism community including Monique s boss, Frankie, were shocked that Evelyn asked for Monique ONLY Monique or no deal at all There are some complications for Monique to figure out with work plus her husband, David just left her not even married a full year , but her life is about to change Why did Evelyn pick Monique to write her book We wonder right away We also want to know about Evelyn s life her husband s and which one she loved the most We have many questions as we take this journey and it s delicious with many insightful life lessons and messages.Intimacy closeness trust and real friendship grows as Monique listens to Evelyn s life story Monique is past the point of remaining objective She knows how specular of a human being Evelyn is Against all of her journalistic integrity Monique feels a full range of emotions for her Monique begins to feel a deep connection and love with Evelyn There are many juicy stories that get revealed about Evelyn s past marriages, relationships, and movies she stars in, Father and Daughter , Little Women , and the title role in Anna Karenina , however when Evelyn begins to share about her present day lifea secret door becomes unhinged Both women will have to face the truth together My final words THIS NOVEL IS EARTH SHATTERING FABULOUS FANTASTIC WONDERFUL soooooo GOOD I can barely stand it It fellow reviewers I trust completely who were raving about it, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try a new genre for a change I m so glad I did because this was stunning, and Evelyn s story moved me in ways I didn t anticipate it would when I started.I like to think this dichotomy between the cover and the unexpected intricacies of Evelyn s story was a clever deception on the author and publisher s part Giving this book a title that mirrors tabloid headlines about a Hollywood icon is very in keeping with the way Evelyn is valued by the industry itself An industry in which her worth is directly correlated to her appearance as Evelyn Hugo, the actress, while disregarding the complexities and intricacies present in Evelyn Herrera, the woman behind the icon Watching Evelyn s story unfold was the most fun I ve had all year I couldn t put this book down A reader might think they ve got her figured out, and then Taylor Jenkins Reid goes ahead and peels back another layer Part of me would love to shout from the rooftops some of the spoilers present in this story because I loved them, but I think the journey through to those revelations is too important to spoil For a story set in the decades between 1950 and the present, the themes and political discourse that is threaded through the narrative are still stark and important For those of you who seek diversity in your stories, I hope you ve got this novel on your radar Evelyn and Monique are both WOC and there are diverse characters as well Taylor Jenkins Reid is a master at weaving their experiences as women with thematic elements of love, self discovery and embracing truths that are not always self evident into both her lead character s journeys Their stories are topical, relevant and achingly real They serve as an especially important reminder for those who might assign value onto women and celebrity icons for their appearance and status while failing to recognize the person behind the image and that we all make flawed choices from time to time. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is brilliant, compelling and a triumph of my reading year thus far I m going to keep my eye out for books by this author in I was a part of their lives instead of an outsider reading about them Reid also does an amazing job developing her characters, I was rooting for all of them to get what they want and to achieve their goals.I never really know what to expect when I dive into a book by Reid, but I can honestly say this book was full of surprises and twists I didn t see coming This book spans from the 1950 s to the present day, and we get to know all of the loves of Evelyn s life Evelyn herself was enchanting, I found myself fascinated by her life story, her choices and her perseverance While love was a motivating factor, to me this was mostly a story about success and survival Evelyn was always going to do what it takes to be a star and stay at the top, and she would fight for what she wanted.Hollywood and the film industry can be a ruthless place but it can also be one where greatness can be achieved for the lucky ones I think Reid captured the industry and the time periods this story took place in perfectly This is one of the best books I ve read all year and I think if you go into it with an open mind and a kind heart, you ll fall in love with this book like I did If you gains the opportunity of a lifetime when Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo chooses her to write her biography Monique having no ties to Evelyn is understandably baffled, why her Nevertheless, she agrees to do the piece and begins meeting Evelyn each day to hear her story and hopefully learn the reasoning behind Evelyn s choice of author THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO reads as a narrative of Evelyn s life At first, I was completely sucked into the glam and glitz of a Hollywood starlet And like Monique, I couldn t help but wonder why her I formed my own speculations and let me tell you, each one of them was wrong All seven husbands held a purpose and in their own way helped Evelyn become the sensation that the world knows her as There is so much drama, gossip, secrets, and intrigue that it s easy to get swept away and lost inside of it all Buuuuttsomewhere along the way I stopped caring and dare I say, I was bored I m not entirely sure what happened Maybe there was TOO much drama for me Maybe it was the fact that there wasn t one single likeable character, aside from Harry, but in the end even he held a secret that I was not 100% okay with Or possibly this was just bad timing for me I think this quote just about sums up how I feel about Evelyn I hate Evelyn, but I think I like her very much I wish she had never existed, and yet I can t help but admire her a great deal Because you see, Evelyn is NOT a good person She does questionable things and never once considers or cares if she hurts anyone else And yet you do understand her reasoning behind everything You see, very complicated feelings Either way, TJR s writing is amazing and I love that she took risks and wrote something completely out of her usual zone This may not be headed to my favorites shelf but I do know situations However, that was so minor that it s hardly worth mentioning, and certainly not enough to take away even a fraction of a star for.So I guess what my not so short review should be saying is I give The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 5 stars for masterful storytelling, world building, ceiling shattering, heart mending or is it heart breaking just truly awe inspiring words Thank you again, and sexuality especially as they were handled in the 50 s and 60 s Monique is shocked when her editor informs her that the Evelyn Hugo is doing her first interview in years and has specifically asked for her In fact, she won t do it unless Monique is the writer The why isn t answered until much later, but the journey there was a captivating experience What s , when they meet for the first time Evelyn tells her she s actually ready to tell the story of her fascinating and tragic life that no one in the world knows and she wants Monique to write a book The addition of the mystery as to Evelyn s true motivations was constantly in the back of my mind, but when it was revealed, I have to admit I was pretty shocked The clues were all there, I just missed them It s told in sections separated into one for each of Evelyn s seven husbands The bulk is told in the past and there are a few scenes in the present, mostly Monique reacting to what Evelyn has just told her The big question is who was the true love of her life I found myself so curious about this and was really into the story of her life The price of fame is high and Evelyn paid dearly Evelyn was a highly complex woman, she s bold, unflinching, fierce, unapologetic and surprisingly tender and vulnerable as well She was so well crafted that I felt like I was getting the inside scoop on a Hollywood icons life even though she who she loved the most, why she married so many times, and what life was like in late 1950s Hollywood.Born Evelyn Herrera, Evelyn s big dreams and cunning machinations grant her a ticket out of Hell s Kitchen and straight into the lights of Sunset studio in L.A Her voluptuous looks and carefully crafted charms catch the eye of studio execs Donning a new name and look, Evelyn s unapologetic ambition lands her in just the right roles, and the right for now arms of a string of famous husbands. There was nothing she wouldn t do to keep her name in lights, nothing she wouldn t sacrifice be it the storytelling continues, Monique learns the starlet s best kept and shocking secrets, as well as why she chose Monique to tell her story.Loyal readers of Taylor Jenkins Reid should know that this story, Monique as the writer who will document the truth of Evelyn s life as shes about to hit her 70s and Evelyn, as she is finally able to be real to the world about who she is On the one hand, the backdrop of 1950 s Hollywood onwards is compelling but in some ways, that context is rather inconsequential as the characters steal each scene The fame of Evelyn, her husbands and the friends only matter as an inconvenience Evelyn has such character growth from her teens to contemporary times So much happens in her life and the majority of it is spellbinding as she yearns for what she can t have The focus of this story is forbidden, hiding is essential and acting is required in and out of the studio. The side characters to this story made me feel so much, Harry especially was wonderful a friend, a soulmate and he loved unconditionally Connor although a smaller part, brought such growth in Evelyn Celia in some ways was hard to love as a character The twists and especially the final twist were such a gut punch and that element to the story was superb I am a staunch fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid but this may be my favourite of her books yet This book is brave and bold and I love how the book summary was written so as not to expose too much of what is between the pages It is so beautifully written and vividly crafted that THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO is utterly memorable seven of her marriages Exploring her beginning in the 1950, her ruthless ambition and a forbidden love, Monique listens to Evelyn s story and is shocked when it becomes clear that it intersects with her own Part chick lit, part historical fiction, I was in awe of Reid s ability to mix these genres to create such a masterful piece of fiction This story was completely unique to any book I have read lately Told partially in the present, as Monique deals with Hugo s request and her own life, and mostly in the past, surrounding Hugo s rise to fame and life in Hollywood throughout the decades, I found myself completely lost within the pages There were times than one where I found myself wanting to google Evelyn Hugo to find out information it really felt like I was reading an expose She truly plots in great detail because there are so many reviewers who do so much better than I could, but, basically, this novel follows the life and transformation of Evelyn Hugo alongside her seven husbands, her fellow actress closest friend, Celia St James, and her producer friend, Harry Cameron Along the way, we learn of Evelyn s life in the spotlight, from how she got to the A list, to how, eventually, her star began to fade ever so slightly The story alternates between Evelyn s flashbacks and the current day story of writer Monique Grant, who interviews Evelyn to capture her essence and her truth I loved both storylines but was glad that the focus was on Evelyn and that Monique s story never really took away from the central plot This is my first Taylor Jenkins Reid book, and it most definitely will not be my last The way she wrote the characters and the setting, she completely captured the bygone era of old Hollywood and made me feel as if everything were so real More than once, I found myself wanting to Google Evelyn, Celia, Harry, and so many of the other characters to see what they looked like, what movies they all had a part in, how their lives turned out, etc., but then I had to remind myself that the Hollywood that Reid created is all make believe Seven Husbands is just so, so believable that I couldn t believe none of the characters were real This book truly makes you wonder just how similar the lives of real celebrities are to those in the story I was glad that my initial doubts were disproved, that this book was much, much than standard, fluffy chick lit the character development was strong and there were questions and themes that really make you think.I just love the premise of the story, the important issues discussed within, and the vivid, achingly Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a departure from her other books it still had her signature easy readability to it along with a focus on relationships The differences were in how this looked at the whole life of Evelyn and spanned several decades I loved looking at how different the world was as Evelyn s story moved along It was really interesting to see also how she changed along with the times There was also a dual story going on one was clearly Evelyn s life story but the other was relating to the person she picked to help tell her story, Monique Grant, a journalist We get a bit of Monique s life and story throughout as well as eventually finding out how and why Evelyn chose her.I found the whole premise fascinating and was so pulled into Evelyn s story It read almost like a memoir, as essentially that it what it was since it is Evelyn telling her story to Monique As a memoir junkie I loved that and it really had my attention While some things seemed so big Hollywood of the story it all felt like it could have been a real story Like Evelyn Hugo really existed and I think that is why this book worked amazingly.Evelyn was such a complicated character While I was often rooting for her, she was kind of an awful person when it came down to it She was ruthless but in that industry at that time being a woman, you probably had to be Complicated characters are great because they challenge you and make you think and Evelyn definitely did that for me I wish Monique had a little to her story though I found her far less interesting in comparison I did love her character growth be an understatement This book took over my life and I couldn t stop reading it until the last page Taylor Jenkins Reid is making a name for herself just like Evelyn Hugo and I know this is going to be a bestseller This book is not a romance Rather, it is a sordid tale of a woman who made a name for herself and became Hollywood royalty It is about a woman who gave up all the important things in life just so she could make it to the top And she did Evelyn Hugo comes off as a bit of a narcissist, she is not a sweet and kind woman who puts her family first, and she certainly would t be the type of person anyone would go to for love advise But she is a powerful and smart woman One I wouldn t want to go against And the author writes her like she is a living and breathing person How she was able to bring this woman to life is beyond me, but she entrapped me in the story and I couldn t look away Now, don t think this book is only about a narcissistic woman who cares about no one because it s not It s also a book about the powers of suppression and many who take their lives for granted could sure learn a thing or two just by reading this story LGBTQ issues are at the forefront of the novel, although not as visible as some of the other themes And all of this put together makes for one powerful story If you are a fan of the author this book needs to be pushed to the top of your TBR
